I recently received the edits back for the final novel of the ‘Xuan Wu’ series, ‘Black Jade’. My editor contacted me privately at the same time, because she didn’t know it was the final book. Here’s some of her comments:

“As always, it’s a fantastic story with your trademark twists and turns, and some excellent sex scenes. I love the way you manage to make a scene very sexy in just a couple of paragraphs and without going into explicit detail.”

“… but I’m a bit worried that perhaps Black Jade is the last of this series? I can see this would work well as a final book, but I’m also feeling bereft as a reader to think this could be the last one. If so, I hope you have another brilliant series ready to kick off in the not-so-distant future. (No pressure!)”

I emailed her back and told her it was the last book, and she replied:

“I didn’t know how that was going to pan out. You really push that as far as you can, and it works brilliantly. I totally agree that you are ripping out your readers’ hearts and stomping on them!!”

<cue evil laughter>

Oh Kylie, so many years have now passed since coffee at Carindale with my family!
The last comment by your editor “I totally agree that you are ripping out your readers’ hearts and stomping on them” is scaring me!!!
But I do agree that your next series should also be expansive, you have already set an enormous standard.
Congratulations on your series and I cannot wait until this book is released.

(with you from the start to the finish!!)

  2. Belinda Wicks says:

Yes please how long do we have to wait

To think… For all of these years, I have loved and lost with the Emma character.. I have read and reread all of the books at least 5 times over.. I will be so sad the series is ending, but you gave all of your readers the best heart-breaking love story. The empowerment of Emma as a strong woman, its made me think and actually research the Tao.. Just.. Its simply amazing. You’re amazing Kylie ^.^ I hope you bring us some more of your writing some day!

  4. Belinda Wicks says:

AWESOME! !!! What are the chances of Tasmania signings??? I have kids escaping is difficult.

I cannot express how much I loved your whole series of books, Kylie. As a bookshop manager for 15 years I absolutely sold the heck out of your books to make sure as many people as possible fell in love with your fantasy world and the strong, ass-kicking, OBVIOUSLY AUSTRALIAN female lead. You’ve done a fantastic service to Australian fantasy writing. Well done!

I’m waiting with bated breath for the finale that we all knew was coming, but I’m already incredibly bereft. PLEASE tell me your next series of books will be set in the same world – I can’t stand to lose that too!

    • Kylie says:

Thanks for your kind words, Steve. I am definitely considering having another series in the same universe, I don’t think fans like you would have it any other way!

May. What a nice birthday gift for me. That’s just so thoughtful Kylie. See, I knew you cared!

I am so eager for this, but saddened all the same, for the end is nigh.

Well, the more you write, the more I’ll buy.

  7. Ezzy says:

OMG I am on tenterhooks after that comment! Hurry up May 2016!

Kylie, I am so thrilled you’re starting to think of the next series (although I can’t believe this one will be over – I have re-read the books so many times!), I love the way you write. Emma is my favourite protagonist ever!

Good luck with the final edits, we will be waiting eagerly!

  8. Emma says:

OMG πŸ™ I hate when good series come to an end. Im hanging out for the next book. This is one more series that will be going in my collection to hand over to my children to read when they are older, I dont have many in the collection because im very fussy with the books i keep. Hope to see more from you soon <3

    Hello Kylie!!!

We met once at a supanova convention in Melbourne, 2013. I was that silly 17 year old that brought my entire collection of your well loved books that you signed!!!! I still think about that day, and don’t think anything will ever top meeting my hero and role model.
Your books taught me who to be as a person, how I should treat people, and to never discriminate. Emma was ( and still is) who I strive to be as a person, and I’ll always thank you for giving me something as special as that.

I’m quite sad that my childhood series is coming to an end, but I’m also so totally excited to read more of your magic. As long as Emma is happy, I’m happy :p

You’ve impacted on my life so heavily when I needed it most, your books helped me through the hardest times of my life.
Thank you so much for helping me become who I am today.

    Love always, Bridget Glozier

    • Kylie says:

Thank you so much, Bridget, comments like yours always give my little author heart a special boost. I hope to see you at the next Comic-Con or Supanova!

  10. Deborah Hawke says:

Sad to hear the series is going to end – I have absolutely loved all the books. If fact I’ve just started reading them again.
I do hope that something new will develop. Your such a talented writer, I hope you have something new in mind.

    • Kylie says:

Thanks, Deborah. I’m already well into a new series that’s in some ways similar, and in some ways very different. I hope you will enjoy it!

  11. Shirley Williamson says:

Can’t wait for Black Jade to be released. Happy to find out what happens to Emma and John but sad to see the series finished. Hope I can get to a book signing as I have missed a couple because of illness.See you at the next book signing

    • Kylie says:

Hi Shirley, You hold a special place in my heart and there’s always a hug for you when you can make it to a con. I understand how tough it is for you, and I’m glad I could help you through your hard times.

  12. Rod Owen says:

Have loved your story of Emma from day one. I love the way you infuse the narrative with Taoist wisdom – it has rekindled my interest in it and Buddhism. I have also been inspired to keep practicing my tai chi and chi kung.

My life is better for having read, and retread, Emma’s tale. Like the others, I too will mourn the finish. If we’re sad, then it means we really valued what we’ve lost – so we should celebrate that! Thank you for investing such a large amount of time, energy and wisdom.

  13. Nerida says:

Hello Kylie, I have just discovered your books and devoured the first three in less than a week. I picked up the first one by chance at a little book shop in Jimboomba called “That Book Place”. Will be going back to order the next three. My mum and dad are also reading them and loving them too!
The story lines are great. But I have one criticism…..I couldn’t put the darn books down! Have only managed to get to sleep after the book has hit me in the nose when I fell asleep reading them…usually around 1.30 in the morning! πŸ™‚
Thanks and I can hardly wait to read the rest!!

  14. Annalise says:

I cannot wait for the final book! I started reading this series as a teenager, and its still one of the best I’ve read. Starting my reread now, so I can jump right in when Black Jade is published.

  15. Melissa says:

I’m a recent fan, thanks to BookBub advertising the “White Tiger” ebook at a discount. In less than two weeks I’ve already purchased the rest of the Xuan Wu books and lost several hours of sleep because I can’t put them down at night! They are so well written and enthralling, plus the banter with Tiger and other characters is hilarious! I can’t wait for Black Jade to be released in the US so I can see what Xuan Wu looks like at full power. πŸ™‚

  16. Miranda says:

Kylie it’s sad that this will be the last one of this series, I went through a hard time in my life and it keeps me going reading your books. I re read the series over and over I think I’m over 100 times for each book so far and it only takes me 2 hours at most to read each book. Thanks for all the books you come out with it takes me out of this world for awhile. Xxoo

  17. Miranda says:

It would be awesome if a movie or TV series was made a lot of people world wide would love to be part of it

  18. Rebecca says:

    Hi Kylie!
I love your books! I’ve been dying for the new one to come out after reading the demon child. I would like to know when black jade will become available. I see that you have posted May but I’ve seen on amazon and chapters that it won’t come out until September. Is there anyway you can confirm the release date for me please? BTW I love the books I know I’ve mentioned it before but can’t help it :). Thank you!

  19. Julie Davies says:

    Just finished Black Jade
Great concluding novel to a brilliant series. Thank you ,it was a treat.
Can’t wait for your next work to come out. You are one of my favourite authors.

  20. Sonya says:

After reading the entire series in a little over 2 weeks for the first time, in anticipation for and including the final book all I can say is I am actually heartbroken that it is over. I’m literally having withdrawals from the characters. I want to know more. They have so much more to tell and I want to know it all.
Thank you for providing me a new female hero, haven’t had one since Mara of the Acoma in Raymond E Feists’ Empire trilogy.

    • Kylie says:

Thanks so much, Sonya, I’m glad you enjoyed everything – don’t worry I’m writing more (and more about Simone as well)!

  21. Gregory says:

Would you ever bring back the western shen?

  22. Sam says:

Yes! The Western Heavens/Gods need to be rebuilt/repopulated. You can’t leave it in the hands of demons! And what about Semias? Isn’t he still imprisoned? The Eastern heavens can’t just leave the western demons unchecked and forget about the western heavens and Semias! After all the trouble, if they go back to ignoring the rest of the world and only focusing on the East, they’ve learned nothing. They need to contact all the other shen in all the heavens and find some way to work together and open lines of communication. And find some way to fix the Western Heavens! The North went to crap when Xuan Wu wasn’t around, and the Eastern heavens have such an impact on the earthly plain, without the western gods aren’t the Western heavens doomed and basically going to drag the world with it?

Please write more to fix the Western Heaven stuff :'(

Really loved the book series πŸ™‚
